Asaph is a prominent figure in the Bible. He was a Levite who served in the role of worship leader for the children of Israel during the time of King David. He is first mentioned in 1 Chronicles 6:39, where it is recorded that he went with David to bring the ark of the covenant up to Jerusalem. He is best known as the author of twelve Psalms, one of which is Psalm 50, which is also known as “The Great Hallel”.
The Bible tells us a little bit about Asaph’s history. He was a Levite and was charged with leading the choir of David. He was joined by his three sons and by some Levites of the family of his father Ethan, the Ezrahite. He and his group sang in the presence of the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant every time they changed locations. He and his sons became part of the inner circle of King David and were among the leading musicians in the Temple of Jerusalem.
During King Solomon’s reign, Asaph continued to lead the worship at the Temple, and his sons, Asarelah and Joel, each had positions of responsibility in the Levitical organization. Asaph and his family were rewarded for their faithful service and Asaph was given an allotment of farmland near the city of Jericho. He also enjoyed close relationship with Solomon and his son and successor, Rehoboam.
Despite his long and admirable service in the Temple, Asaph appears to have gone through a difficult period in his later years. In 2 Chronicles 29:15, we read that Isaiah and other prophets rebuked the people for their wickedness, and warned of God’s judgement if the people didn’t repent. Asaph was likely affected by this, as he wrote in Psalm 73:1-2, “But as for me, my feet almost slipped; I nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” It appears that Asaph was struggling with his faith and feeling resentful towards the wicked.
In Psalm 73:17-18, Asaph shared his moment of awakening when he realized that the wicked will be judged. He wrote, “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction.” These verses reveal the moment of clarity that Asaph experienced during his struggles and his eventual understanding of God’s justice.
In the end, Asaph did overcome his struggles and found peace in his faith. He wrote in Psalm 73:24-25, “You guide me with Your counsel, and afterwards You will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You.” He continued to serve faithfully in the Temple, and he wrote several more Psalms that praised and glorified God.

After his rediscovery of faith, Asaph continued to write the Psalms that he is best known for. His Psalms are full of rich imagery and deep emotion as he sings praises to God and declarations of his faith. He wrote of his struggles in Psalm 73, and while his faith was tested, he was ultimately shown that no-one can stand against God and remain unharmed. He praised God for His justice, mercy and faithfulness, and for being all that he had in heaven and on earth.
