What Does The Bible Say About Astrologers

The Bible does not directly mention the practice of astrology, but it does contain clear warnings about the dangers of participating in such activities. Astrology seeks to interpret the positions of the stars and planets in relation to each other in order to predict the future, find answers to life’s questions, or gain insight into one’s character. The Bible clearly states that human effort is insufficient to determine our destinies or to peer into the spiritual realm. In Deuteronomy, God warns: “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD” (18:10-12).

Similarly, Leviticus 19:26 states: “Do not practice divination or seek omens.” Other verses advise against participating in astrology, divination, and false worship practices: Isaiah 8:19, Jeremiah 14:14, Daniel 2:27, and Acts 16:16.

Though the Bible does not mention astrologers specifically, it does explicitly condemn their activities, as astrology typically involves divination and witchcraft to interpret planetary motions and celestial events. In essence, astrologers are seeking knowledge and direction from deities other than the one true God.

Astronomy, on the other hand, is the scientific study of the objects in the universe and the laws governing their motions. Biblical references to constellations refer to an early observance of heavenly bodies, which suggests the ancients had knowledge of celestial events and principles of astronomy. Additionally, prophecy often relies on astronomical events and data, such as in the story of the three magi and the star of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1-2). However, the Bible never advocates astrology.

Consequently, Christianity has taken a firm stance against astrology as idol worship. God alone holds the power, not the stars. In Jeremiah 10:2-4, we are warned about those who engage in astrology: “Do not follow the practices of the nations…The customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.”

The Bible makes it clear that no one should be consulted regarding our destiny other than God and His Word, and that participating in astrology is a form of idol and sorcery worship. Are you following the practices of the nations by seeking advice from astrologers, psychics, and tarot card readers? If so, you are participating in activities that are forbidden by the Bible.

Gods Guidance

The Bible paints a clear image of the one true God and His influence in our lives. Rather than trusting in astrologers, mediums, and fortune tellers, Christians should seek direction from God. The Bible says: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

The Bible also tells us to be discerning and that our words will judge us someday: “My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen to your words, but they do not put them into practice.  With their mouths they express devotion, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice andplays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice” (Ezekiel 33:31-32).

If we seek God’s order and direction, He will lead us down the path of righteousness. Such guidance can be found in the Bible and through prayer. We will find God’s perfect will if we submit to Him.

Prophecy

The Bible often mentions the use of celestial events as a sign of prophecy, such as the star of Bethlehem. Someone gifted with prophetic powers may use the stars and planets to foretell events as outlined in the Bible. But it is important not to confuse predictive prophecy with divinatory predictions. Predictive prophecies are divinely inspired, while divinatory predictions are derived from astrological readings.

Prophets of old used celestial objects as signs to indicate the coming of certain events—not to predict or foretell the future as an astrologer might. Writing about the Magi, Matthew 2:1-2 says, “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’”

The Bible is full of examples of men and women being guided by the stars in God’s service, such as Abraham, Joseph, and Moses. Astrological predictions are false and should not be pursued; discerning the will of God through prayer, on the other hand, is always true.

Gods Wisdom

The Bible doesn’t advocate astrology, divination, or any other form of false worship. Instead, it offers clear teaching on the need to trust in God’s plan and His divine wisdom. In James 1:5, we read: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

Through humility and prayer, we can find the answers and the wisdom that we need. We must remember the promises God has made throughout the Bible, and trust in His perfect plan for our lives. As Proverbs 3:6 states: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Power of Prayer

The Bible calls us to be faithful and rely on prayer to receive God’s guidance and protection. When we pray, we can expect an answer from God, either immediately or later when He deems it best. The Bible says: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

God’s answers to our prayers come in the form of guidance, peace, hope, and wisdom that serve to direct our paths. We can trust that the answer we receive will be the right one, and that God will never lead us astray. Any guidance that does not come from God should be rejected. As 1 Thessalonians 5:21 states, “Test everything. Hold on to the good.”

The Bible gives us countless examples of how we can use prayer and God’s wisdom to lead us in the right direction. Timothy 2:1-2 says, “First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.”

Avoid False Idols

The Bible also advises us to reject false idols, such as ancient gods as well as astrology and other non-Biblical concepts. Exodus 20:3-4 warns: “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make with me gods of silver, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.” Instead, we should rely on God for guidance and direction.

Not only does God command us to reject false gods, He also promises to provide for us if we obey Him. We can find strength and courage in the promises He has made throughout the Bible. Deuteronomy 28:11-12 says: “The LORD will open for you His well-stocked storehouse, the skies, to give your land rain at the right time and bless all you do. You will lend to many nations, but you yourself won’t have to borrow.”

The Bible teaches us the importance of trusting in God’s power and guidance instead of looking to the stars or false deities. Drawing on His strength and grace will lead us down the path of righteousness and bring us closer to Him.
