Life of Mark
Mark was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, who is thought to have written the Gospel of Mark, the second book in the New Testament of the Bible. He was a man of great influence in the early era of Christianity and was a figure of great mystery, as little is known about his early life. The sparse details that have come down to us show that he was a follower of John the Baptist, very likely his cousin, and was brought to the knowledge of Jesus by his brother Andrew. Despite being fairly unknown by name, Mark’s legacy has been lasting, reflected through a large number of early Christian documents and his surviving work, the Gospel of Mark.
The Gospel of Mark is thought to have been written sometime between 66 and 70 C.E. It is an important piece of scripture, as it stands as the earliest of the four known gospels, and its content by and large sets the framework for the other gospels that followed in the New Testament. This particular gospel is considered to be the shortest, as well as the most basic, in terms of its language and structure. His remains were altered and kept as a sacred relic in Alexandria. Today, the tomb of Mark is housed within the grounds of the Church of St Mark in Alexandria, Egypt.

Even when our beliefs and ideals come under attack, Mark’s writing offers a sense of solace to those who are faithful to their beliefs, as Mark’s example is one of strength and devotion.”

Mark’s example is one of true faith and dedication, despite the hostile environment of the time in which he lived. His unwavering commitment to his beliefs is inspiring, and provides us valuable insight into our own relationship with faith and how that faith can shape our actions.
My own understanding and analysis of Mark, is one of admiration and respect. Despite the fact that he lived in an age where persecution of Christians was rampant, he continued to prioritize his faith over his safety and well-being. This is especially inspiring in today’s age, where faith is relatively more accessible, but unfortunately not as widely practiced. He serves as an example that faith can indeed have a lasting and powerful impact, one that will resonate throughout history.

Mark’s role in spreading the gospel was critical in the early period of Christianity. Through his missionary work and writings, he was able to create a single vision for many Christians, unifying practices and beliefs.

The interpretation of Mark’s Gospel has been a much-debated topic by scholars over the years. Many have put forth differing opinions on the purpose of the gospel and its intended audience.
J.E. Lowden of Columbia University puts forth the theory that the gospel was intended largely for Gentiles, those who were not of Jewish decent but who converted to the faith. He argues that because of Jesus’ commands to Matthew and John that they would “go to the Gentiles”, Mark wrote with a more universal tone, and his references to “the knowledge of the kingdom of God” would have made much more sense to a Gentile audience at the time.
On the other hand, John J. O’Rourke of the University of Notre Dame argues for the concept that Mark’s Gospel had a larger, more expansive audience. His take is that the gospel was tailored to “reach out to many different groups of the Roman world”, including wealthy and influential citizens, the poor and oppressed, those of varying classes and backgrounds, and those of different religious standings.

Mark’s work and legacy have also been an important source of inspiration for modern-day movements. For example, his teaching of ‘loving your neighbor’ has become an important aspect of many global charity organizations, and is often given as an example of how one should respond to a situation.

This has been exemplified by the hundreds of missionaries and evangelists across the globe that continue to go into hostile and dangerous territories to spread the word of God.
