Understanding Glory
The Bible is full of references to glory. It’s often used to describe the greatness, majesty and power of God, His presence, and even His people. Throughout the Biblical texts, glory is used to describe the excellent or superb qualities of different persons and things.
Glory is a common term in both the Old and New Testaments. To help understand its exact meaning, it’s important to look at the original Hebrew and Greek words that are used. The main Hebrew word for glory is kābōd, which literally means “heaviness” or “weight.” In the Greek Septuagint, the word for glory is doxa, which is usually used to mean “praise” or “honor.”
The Bible often speaks of the glory of God. God reveals His glory in two primary ways: His power and His character. Scripture teaches that God’s power is so great that it’s impossible to adequately describe. It’s said that when Moses asked to see God’s glory, God responded with a declaration of His character: “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” (Exodus 34:6).
The Bible also speaks of “the glory of the Lord” as the visible manifestation of God’s presence. In the Old Testament, the glory of the Lord appeared as a bright light or fire. In the New Testament, the glory of the Lord is most closely associated with Jesus himself, who is often referred to as “the radiance of God’s glory” (Hebrews 1:3).
When the Bible uses glory to describe people or things, it’s often referring to attributes like beauty, honor, or success. The Bible also refers to glory in terms of exaltation, or the status or condition of being highly esteemed and honored.

When we accept Jesus, we are promised glory in heaven for eternity. This glory is far greater than anything on earth, and no one can ever take it away from us.
The Purpose of Glory

Bringing Glory to God

We must resist the temptation to live according to our own desires and passions, and instead strive to glorify Him in everything we do.
The Bible encourages us to “give glory to God before the whole world” (1 Peter 4:11). This means living our lives in such a way that it honors and pleases God, even when it’s unpopular to do so. We must also acknowledge Him in all that we do, recognizing His hand in every situation and thanking Him for His blessings.
As we seek to bring glory to God, we must remember that it’s not just about our actions and words. We must also strive to glorify Him through our attitudes, our values, and our relationships. We must love Him with all our heart and make it our aim to please Him in all that we do.
The Joy of Glorifying God
No matter how hard we may try, we can never fully give God the glory He deserves. It is impossible for humans to fully understand the infinite greatness of God. Yet, He is still worthy of our worship and praise. We can strive to bring Him glory, even though our efforts pale in comparison with His greatness.
By living our lives with the aim of glorifying God, we open the door to greater joy in our relationships with Him and with others. We come to appreciate more fully His grace and mercy. We experience a peace that passes understanding, and a hope that does not disappoint.
As we strive to bring glory to God, He promises to fill us with His presence and fulfill our hearts’ desire to worship Him. In return, He gives us the joy that comes from knowing that we are loved and accepted by Him, now and forever.
The Interpretation of Glory in the Bible
Interpreting the meaning of glory in the Bible may be difficult due to how it’s used in various contexts. Yet, one thing that remains consistent throughout Scripture is that God is the source of all glory. We should strive to bring Him glory through our words and actions, to live in such a way that pleases Him and reflects his perfect love and authority.
The Bible also speaks of our eternal glory in heaven, stored away for us if we have placed our faith in Jesus Christ. When we trust in Him and accept His grace, we can know that our future glory is secure and that nothing will ever take it away from us.

Glorifying God in Daily Life

Understanding the Glory of God’s Covenant
God’s Glory is expressed and fulfilled in His covenant with us. Covenant is His promise to us that He will never leave us or forsake us. His glory manifested in a single moment, when He gave us the covenant of New Life through the sacrifice of His own biblical Son, Jesus. His glory shines even brighter when we accept this covenant, showing our commitment to God by living our lives according to His will.
In His mercy and grace, God has given us the chance to accept the blessing of His covenant. He has called us to trust in Him and to live lives dedicated to Him. He promises to lead us, guide us, and protect us. He promises to provide for all our needs and to never leave us or forsake us.
God’s glory is made most evident in His covenant with us. It is where we can always turn for refuge and hope, and it is where we can come to receive His fullness of love and unending grace. It is through His covenant that God reveals Himself most fully, reminding us that He is the source of all glory, and boundless love.
Living in God’s Glory
Living in God’s glory means resting in His peace and joy. It means having faith in His constant and unwavering love, understanding that He desires the very best for us. It means experiencing His goodness and His provision. It means living with humility, knowing that everything good comes from Him, and that He alone is worthy of all our praise.
