Early Life
King James was born in 1566 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Mary Queen of Scots and her second husband, Lord Darnley. When he was an infant, Mary was overthrown from the throne, and James was declared King of Scotland in 1567.
He was only a year old at the time and he was taken into the care of the Protestant lords for his protection. He spent much of his childhood in the care of the Gordon family. He would later become King James I of England and Ireland, following the unification of the two countries.
