Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate the criteria by which we deem one “honorable.” Consider Epaphras. Although this is a shortened version of Epaphroditus, virtually all scholars agree he is different from the man of that name mentioned in Philippians. But he was of the same character and virtue.
So what does that say about our current criteria for honor? Maybe it’s time for a change.
St Matthew is known as the Apostle of Ethiopia because he is believed to have preached the Gospel in that country and suffered martyrdom there. This tradition is ancient, and it is possible that St Matthew did in fact preach in Ethiopia and meet his end there. However, we cannot be sure, and it is also possible that this story is simply a legend. Either way, St Matthew is an important figure in the history of Christianity, and he is remembered as a faithful missionary and martyr.
