Nahum is mentioned in the Biblical texts of both the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and the Christian canon (Old and New Testament). In the Book of Genesis, chapter 10, verse 14, he is referred to as one of the sons of the Biblical character, King Meshech: ” And Meshech begat Nahum: and they dwelt in the south of Karenah”. According to the narrative of Genesis, they were part of the Japhethite descendants of Noah, who were dispersed throughout the earth after the flood. Nahum’s descendants eventually settled in the southern area of what is now known as Iran, near present day Kuwait.
Minor Prophets
In the Tanakh, Nahum is mentioned later in the Minor Prophets section of the Biblical texts. He is the author of the Prophet Nahum, the seventh book in the Minor Prophets. In this book he is referred to as a prophet from the Jewish town of Elkosh, located in the city of Ninevah during the time of the Assyrian Empire’s reign. In the book of Nahum, he is credited with helping to lead the Jews to victory over their oppressors.

In this book, Nahum talks of how God will bring judgement against Assyria and its wickedness before restoring peace and order in the city. The book talks of the end of Assyria, who were responsible for the exile of the Jews and the destruction of their holy city. In the book, Nahum goes on to explain that the judgment of God will be swift and exact. He talks in detail about the retributive justice against the Assyrian army and about how God will have mercy on His people.
