What The Bible Says About Death
The Bible is the ultimate source of comfort and guidance to those facing death or living with the death of a loved one. With its timeless stories of hope and promise, the Bible speaks clearly to all of us about life after death. According to the Bible, death is a natural part of life and part of God’s plan. It comes to us all, and it’s a hard road, but it is often a source of comfort to know that this road leads to eternity in Heaven. It can be difficult to understand why God has given us the gift of death, especially when we experience the pain of losing a loved one.
God’s Word tells us that death is part of His plan for our lives. In Genesis 2:17, God says, “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” Here, death is presented as a consequence of sin and a natural part of life. And in Job 7:1, we are reminded that life is fleeting and that death is our eventual end: “Do not all go to one place?” Though the Bible doesn’t offer us a detailed account of what happens to us after we die, we can find comfort in knowing that God has a plan for us and that death does not have the last word.
The Bible encourages us to make the most of our lives on earth by living for God’s glory until our appointed time of death. After we die, we will be in the presence of the Lord, which is described in Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things are passed away.” Life on earth is temporary, but death assures us of a future beyond the grave in Heaven. Death is only a temporary separation, as we look forward to being reunited with our loved ones in heaven one day.
The Bible also tells us that we will not face death alone. In John 14:18, Jesus says, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” Jesus, fully God and fully man, understands our fear of death and the pain of being separated from our loved ones. He has promised to be with us in our time of need, and He will ultimately prevail over death.
Finally, the Bible exhorts us to consider the afterlife and to make every effort to prepare ourselves for the life to come in Heaven.
