Definition of Hope In The Bible
The Bible is full of teachings about hope, with references to this concept being found throughout both the Old and New Testaments. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, hope is defined as “to want something to happen or be true” or “to trust that something will happen.” In the Bible, hope is defined as having faith and belief that good things will happen in the future, even when circumstances are difficult in the present.
Encouraging Hope Through Biblical Texts
Hope is encouraged through key scriptural passages in the Bible. Romans 5:3-5 states that “we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” The book of Psalms is full of messages about hope for all of God’s people, with Psalm 33:18-20 proclaiming “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their cry; the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
