Birth of Obadiah
Obadiah was one of the 11 sons of the priestly family of John according to the bible book of Luke 3:1-2. Obadiah was born in Bethlehem and was a faithful follower of the Lord. He was a priest of the tribe of Issachar. His father was a priest and he also served in the Temple in Jerusalem as his father had done before him.
In the bible book of 1 Samuel 2:18, it is stated that Obadiah was the leader of the Levites. He was put in charge of the sacrifices and offerings that were made to the lord by the people. He was also responsible for keeping the sacred vessels of the Lord.
In this role, Obadiah was greatly respected by the Lord, as he faithfully served in the temple without fail. It is recorded that he served faithfully and without complaint, even when faced with difficult tasks.
Confrontation with King Ahaz
During the reign of King Ahaz, Obadiah was faced with an important decision. The king had decided to replace the altar of the Lord in the temple for an idolatrous one. Obadiah refused to comply with this and instead removed all of the sacred vessels of the Lord from the temple. He then hid them in a cave near Bethlehem, which he believed to be a safe hiding place.
Ahaz was furious when he heard of Obadiah’s disobedience. He sent his trusted captain to arrest Obadiah and bring him before the king. Obadiah was determined to maintain his loyalty to the Lord and refused to surrender the vessels. This resulted in his being imprisoned in the king’s palace until he agreed to comply.
Obadiah Escapes and Preaches God’s Word
Once Obadiah had escaped, he took refuge with the people of Bethlehem and began to preach the word of the Lord. He encouraged the people to remain loyal to the Lord and to trust in Him. He also urged them to reject the idolatry of King Ahaz.
Although not much is known about Obadiah’s activities during this time, it is believed that he continued to preach the word of the Lord until his death. During his ministry, he wrote several books that are now included in the bible, including the book of Obadiah and The Vision of Obadiah.
Death of Obadiah
The exact date of Obadiah’s death is not known, but it is believed to have occurred sometime between 880 and 897 BC. It is recorded that on his deathbed, Obadiah declared that he had been obedient to the Lord throughout his life, and that he had not once disobeyed Him.
