Women Working and Contributions in the Bible
The Bible is filled with examples of women working and making important contributions in society. From the story of Mary and Joseph in the New Testament, to Miriam and Rahab in the Old, the Bible reflects the fact that women were an integral part of ancient Middle Eastern life and should be respected and valued.
In ancient times, women usually stayed in the home and managed domestic tasks. However, challenges such as poverty, famine, and war sometimes drove women to seek work outside of the home. Scriptures such as Proverbs 31:18 and 31:31 tell us that a virtuous woman is diligent in her studies, physically strong, and able to provide for her family. Women can lead Bible studies, teach classes, preach sermons, and serve as elders and deacons. Their unique perspective and ministry can be invaluable when it comes to ministering to both men and women.
The Bible also tells us that men and women are co-heirs in the grace of God. This means we have equal standing in Christ and should be treated fairly in the church. In Galatians 3:28, Paul says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” This teaches us that all believers stand as equals before God and that each of our voices matter.
In order for the church to be a true reflection of God’s Kingdom, gender roles should not be a determining factor in initiating ministry or service but rather the gifting of the individual. Men and women can work together in the church, united in their mission to glorify God.
