Intimacy and Closeness in Relationships
The Bible speaks of relationships before marriage in a few different ways. On the one hand, there is a high level of intimacy and feeling of closeness that can come out of relationships. This is especially true for those who are able to share their lives with another person in the form of friendship, trust and understanding. But, as the Bible states, relationships outside of marriage should be pure and holy, and not involve any type of physical or sexual intimacy. St. Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 7:1-2, “It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, because of fornications, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.”
In other words, relationships outside of marriage must be holy and remain focused on seeking God’s will. 1 Timothy 5:1-2 explains this further, “Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.” This scripture speaks to relationships being based on honoring one another in a holy and pure manner. Not only should physical affection be limited, but showing love and respect should come first.
Boundaries and Purity in Relationships
The bible also emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries in any relationship. In Proverbs 5:8-9 it tells us, “Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, lest you give your honor to others and your years to the cruel one.” This scripture is telling us to set boundaries that protect ourselves from people or situations that could bring us harm. These boundaries can be physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual.
When considering relationships, Lent is often a good time to remind ourselves of the importance of purity. In John 8:7 it says, “Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone.” This verse is an important reminder that we must show compassion, love and mercy to others while still striving to live according to God’s will. This includes remaining abstinent in relationships before marriage and using our relationship to bring glory to God.
Honoring God in Judgment and Forgiveness
The bible is also clear about how we should approach relationships when we have been wronged. In Matthew 5:43-48, it tells us to “love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” This scripture serves as a reminder that we should not judge others, but rather show them love, mercy, understanding and forgiveness. We should also examine ourselves and our own actions, considering how we can improve and grow in our obedience to God.
The Need for Patience and Faith
Another biblical principle that guides relationships is the need for patience and faith. In Hebrews 11 it reminds us that there is no better way to honor God than to stand firm in faith and wait on His timing. That includes waiting on God’s plan for the right person to come into our lives and then relying on Him the entire journey. This virtue of patience and faith is essential in any relationship, but especially relationships before marriage.
