God’s Law and Immigration
The Bible has a great deal to say about immigration and how it should be handled in a just and compassionate manner. Generally speaking, the Bible supports the concept of migration, with God often using immigrants as a way to make his will known to people. According to some Bible scholars, the early Israelites were instructed by God to treat immigrants as though they were their own family members, to be welcomed and protected.
For example, in Leviticus 19:34, it says: “When a foreign resident resides with you in your land, you must not oppress him. You must treat the foreign resident the same way you treat one of your own citizens. You must love him as much as you love yourself, for you were immigrants in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
Similarly, Deuteronomy 10:18-19 states: “He defends the rights of the oppressed and he gives food to the hungry. The LORD is concerned with immigrants, orphans and widows in their times of distress. He shows compassion to them and he protects them.” This passage clearly highlights God’s concern for those who are not citizens of the land, and stresses the importance of loving and protecting them in the same way native citizens are cared for.
Walking in Faith
A prominent theme throughout the Bible is the idea of ‘walking in faith’. The concept of faith and following God’s law can be seen in many of the Bible’s books, such as James 2:14-17 which states,
“What good is it, My brothers, if a man says he has faith but has no works? Can this kind of faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food, and one of you says, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat well,” but you don’t give them what their body needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith that does not result in good deeds is indeed dead.”
From a biblical perspective, helping others and offering assistance to those in need – especially immigrants who may be in a difficult situation – is an essential part of living a life of faith and in the eyes of God.
Helping Strangers
The Bible is filled with stories of individuals helping those in need. In many cases, these individuals are strangers who are in a vulnerable position and require assistance. For example, in the book of Ruth, we see a story of a woman who is in a new country and is pregnant and destitute. She goes to her relative Boaz, who takes her in, provides her with work and food, and even gives her a place to stay in his house. This story demonstrates how God encourages people to help strangers in need, regardless of their nationality.
The Bible also emphasizes the importance of helping strangers directly. Jesus refers to these acts of kindness by calling them “acts of mercy’ in Matthew 9:13. He demands that we not judge people based on their nationality and instead treat everyone with the same level of respect and care.
Rights of Immigrants
The Bible is clear that immigrants have certain rights and should be treated as human beings. In Exodus 21:12-13, it states: “If an immigrant lives with you in your land, don’t cheat him. Treat the immigrant the same as you would a native born person. You must love him like you love yourself, because you were immigrants in the country of Egypt. Don’t take advantage of them.”
This passage emphasizes the importance of treating immigrants with respect and compassion. It also implies that God has given immigrants certain rights and privileges, such as the right to receive fair wages for their work. Not only does this passage remind us of God’s love for immigrants, but it also serves as an important reminder that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their nationality or circumstances.
Wrongdoing and Immigration
The Bible states that while it is important to help immigrants, it is equally important to ensure that they obey the laws of the land. In Deuteronomy 19:14, it says: “You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.” This passage implies that it is wrong to mistreat immigrants or take advantage of them in any way. It also implies that God expects people to obey the laws of the land, regardless of whether they are citizens or immigrants.
While the Bible stresses the importance of treating immigrants with respect, it also makes it clear that immigrants have a responsibility to follow the laws of the country in which they live. It is an important reminder that everyone is held accountable for their actions and must be willing to accept the consequences for any wrongdoing.
Boundaries and Immigration

God’s Love for All

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in them and they in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. In John 1:11, it says: “He came to his own, but his own did not receive Him.” This passage speaks to the idea of God coming to earth as an immigrant and being rejected by his own people. This powerful story showcases God’s love for all of his creation and serves as a reminder that we should follow in his footsteps and welcome and care for immigrants, no matter what their nationality or background might be.
Dignity for All
Finally, the Bible makes it clear that all people have dignity. In Isaiah 10:2, it reads: “To deprive the justice due to the afflicted and rob the destitute of their rights, and that would mean taking the robe of the widow or denying justice to the orphan.” This passage makes it clear that God will not tolerate the mistreatment of the oppressed or destitute, and that we must show equal respect to all people, regardless of their nationality.
Treating Immigrants Fairly

God’s law instructs from a number of angles that people should be treated fairly, with kindness and respect, and should never be taken advantage of due to their lack of nationality or social status. The Bible also states that immigration is a part of God’s plan and that immigrants often play a role in His will. Gaining Wisdom

Proverbs 16:7 states, “When a person’s ways are pleasing to the LORD, he makes even his enemies be at peace with him.” This passage implies that when we seek God’s wisdom and apply it to our views on immigration, we can find peace with those who may not agree with us. This can be especially helpful when it comes to difficult conversations about immigration, as it encourages us to take a more diplomatic approach in our discussions.
Compassion and Support
The Bible reminds us that immigrants are people too, and should be treated with kindness, compassion, and respect. This can be seen in Matthew 25:35 when Jesus says, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” While it is important to respect and honor the laws of the land, the Bible makes it clear that these should not be used as an excuse to mistreat immigrants. Instead, we should strive to create a compassionate, welcoming environment that celebrates diversity and helps refugees and immigrants feel safe and secure.
Stewardship and Immigration
The biblical directive to “love your neighbor” applies to all people, regardless of their backgrounds or nationalities. In 1 Peter 4:10, it states: “As God’s stewards, serve with the strength that he gives you, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.” This passage tells us that it is our responsibility as Christians to serve others, including immigrants, in a way that brings glory to God. This includes standing up for their human rights, providing assistance to those in need, and helping to create an inclusive environment for all.
