Love One Another
The Bible speaks to us about loving and helping others in many different contexts. In the Bible, we are told to love one another, and one way to show that love is through helping others. When we help others, we show that we care, and it reflects God’s love back to him. The Bible says, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). This verse models how we should conduct ourselves when interacting with other people. We should seek to benefit them, rather than seeking to benefit ourselves.
The Bible says that “whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed” (Proverbs 19:17). This verse shows us that when we help the poor, we are doing something that God approves of and rewards. We should be generous in spirit and in deed. We should also be careful to do what we can to ensure that the most vulnerable members of our society are being helped, rather than neglected.
In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you did it to me.” This verse shows us that when we help someone in need, we are helping Jesus himself. We should keep this in mind and strive to help others with a sense of respect, empathy, and compassion. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.
The Bible also encourages us to be efficient in our help. It reminds us that prudence is a virtue, and that we should not squander our resources. Proverbs 22:9 says “Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.” Here we are reminded that we should use our resources wisely, and not waste them unnecessarily. This includes not only giving away resources, but also making sure that our charity is used wisely and efficiently.
Put Others First
When helping others, we should put them first. The Bible tells us to “do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Phillipians 2: 3). This verse reminds us that when it comes to helping others, we should be humble in spirit and put their needs before our own. We should always try to view the world from their perspective and recognize that we don’t know what it’s like to walk in their shoes.
In 1 John 3:17 it’s written “If anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” This verse reminds us that when it comes to helping others, we should not be selfish or close-minded. We should strive to recognize the humanity in every person and treat them as such, no matter what their circumstances may be.
The Bible also tells us to be understanding of those we are helping. When speaking about the widows and orphans in his day, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14). This verse reminds us that we should not be dismissive of those who are suffering or disadvantaged, but instead be understanding and respectful of them.
In Hebrews 13:16 we’re reminded “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” This verse encourages us to be welcoming to those not within our immediate circle. We should not be prejudiced and should instead try to understand and empathize with the plight of others, regardless of how different their perspectives may be from ours.
Serve Others
The Bible also encourages us to serve others. Matthew 23:11 says “The greatest among you will be your servant.” This verse teaches us that when we are trying to help others, we should do so in a spirit of servitude and humility. We should focus on meeting their needs, rather than seeking to gain recognition for ourselves.
The Bible encourages us to look out for opportunities to serve others. In 1 Peter 4:10 it’s written, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” This verse teaches us that we should actively look for ways to help others in whatever capacity we can. God has blessed us with gifts, and we should use these gifts to spread his love and compassion to those around us.
The Bible also tells us to accept help humbly and gratefully. In Romans 12:8 it’s written “if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously.” This verse reminds us to be gracious and thankful when we receive help from others. We should not be too proud to accept help, and we should be willing to reciprocate when we can.
Finally, the Bible encourages us to be persistent and consistent in our help. In Galatians 6:9 it’s written “Do not give up, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” This verse teaches us that when it comes to helping others, we must not get discouraged or give up easily. We should strive to be persistent, even in the face of adversity, and continue to spread love and kindness to those around us.
Speak Kindly
The Bible also reminds us to be mindful of our words when helping others. In Ephesians 4:29 it’s written “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” This verse reminds us to be mindful of our words when helping others, and to ensure that we speak kindly and with respect. We should strive to spread positivity and compassion, rather than condemnation or judgement.
In Proverbs 31:8 it’s written “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” This verse encourages us to be advocates for those who have no voice, and use our words to speak up for their rights and needs. We should speak out against injustice and seek to help those who have no one to turn to. In order to do this, we must strive to be mindful of our words and use them to bless and bring hope, rather than to bring sadness and pain.
The Bible also encourages us to use our words to “encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). This verse reminds us to not only speak kindly to others, but to be encouraging and uplifting. We should strive to be uplifting and positive in all of our interactions, and use our words to bring comfort, joy, and peace.
The Bible reminds us to “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6). This verse reminds us that our words should be gracious and thoughtful, and never harsh or unkind. We should strive to use our words to bring love and healing, rather than judgment and hurt.
Be Generous
The Bible also encourages us to be generous when helping others. In Deuteronomy 15:11 it says “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.” This verse reminds us that we should generously give to those in need, and strive to be generous in spirit and in deed. We should not be stingy with our resources, but instead strive to use our resources to benefit others.
In Malachi 3:10 it’s written “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessings that you will not have room enough for it.” This verse reminds us that when it comes to helping others, we should be generous. We should not be afraid to give, even in difficult times, because God will always return the blessings tenfold.
The Bible also tells us to practice hospitality when helping others. In Romans 12:13 it says “Practice hospitality to one another without grumbling.” This verse reminds us to not only be generous with our resources, but to also be open and welcoming to those we are helping. We should strive to be hospitable and show hospitality in all of our interactions, even if it means going out of our way to do so.
Finally, the Bible encourages us to remember those who have helped us. In Proverbs 19:17 it’s written “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” This verse reminds us to not forget those who have helped us in our time of need. We should remember to be grateful for their kindness and strive to repay them for their generosity.
Be Thankful and Pray
The Bible reminds us to be thankful for and to pray for those we are helping. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 it’s written “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This verse reminds us to be thankful for all of our blessings, and to appreciate every single one of them. We should recognize that all of our blessings come from God and should strive to thank him and share our blessings with others.
The Bible also encourages us to pray for those we are helping. In James 1:5 it says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” This verse reminds us to take everything to God in prayer, and to seek his wisdom and guidance when it comes to helping others. We should strive to look to God for guidance and strength in all of our endeavors, and to trust in him for all of our needs.
The Bible also tells us to be mindful of our own needs when helping others. In 1 Corinthians 10:24 it says “Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.” This verse reminds us to be mindful of our own needs, and to make sure that we have what we need in order to be effective in helping others. We should take care of ourselves, so that we can take care of others, and not allow ourselves to become overwhelmed or discouraged by our acts of service.
Finally, the Bible reminds us to not be discouraged if our help is not successful. In Matthew 9:37 it says “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.’” This verse reminds us that even if our help is not successful, it does not mean that we should give up. We should instead keep striving to do what we can, knowing that God will provide for our needs and that he will bless us for our efforts.
