Fatherhood in the Bible
The Bible paints a clear portrait of fatherhood and gives fathers much guidance and insight on how best to lead and provide for their family. Biblically, a father is a head of the household who gives not just material but also spiritual and moral leadership to their family. But what are a father’s concrete responsibilities? What should fathers strive to do, according to the Bible?
The most explicit answer is given in the book of Ephesians. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord,” it reads (Ephesians 6:4). Whether it is Jesus’ obedience to God, David’s strength and protection for his family, or Noah’s willingness to trust in God’s plan, each of these fathers serve as a reminder of the high standards God expects from his children.
