The Bible has a lot to say about a fool and about how one should not behave like one. A fool is generally seen as someone who lacks wisdom and makes bad choices. In Proverbs, it is said that the way of a fool is right in his own eyes, while the wise man listens to advice. The book of Proverbs also contains many cautions against foolish behavior and advice on how to become wise.
One of the most famous passages in the Bible on fooling is in Galatians 6:7-8, which says, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” This is generally seen as a warning against making foolish choices. The Bible also warns against foolish speech, saying in Proverbs 10:8 “The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.”

We don’t have to stay in the cycle of foolishness, but instead can make wise choices that lead to true joy and peace in the world.
Why We Should Not Be A Fool
The Bible is clear on why we should not be a fool. One example of this is in Proverbs 14:15, which says, “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps”. In other words, the wise person takes time to think carefully before making decisions, while the fool may act without due consideration. Being a fool can lead to a negative outcome, as Proverbs 10:23 states, “Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding”. However, God is not willing for anyone to stay in a place of foolishness. Instead, He calls us to turn away from our sinful behavior and to seek out His wisdom. In Romans 12:2 it is said, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” What this tells us is that if we allow the Holy Spirit to transform our minds and our hearts, we can break free from foolish thinking and embrace God’s will for our lives.
The Dangers Of Foolishness
Foolishness not only results in obedience to wrong behavior, it can also be incredibly dangerous. Proverbs 28:26 states, “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered”. This tells us that when we rely on our own abilities and do not seek out true wisdom, we are setting ourselves up for failure. We may be blind to the consequences of our actions, or unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Either way, we could be unknowingly putting ourselves in harm’s way.
The Bible also warns us that when someone is foolish they can open the door to the enemy’s influence. Proverbs 29:6 says, “An evil man is ensnared by transgression, but the righteous sings and rejoices”. This is a reminder that our choices matter and that foolishness can lead to spiritual harm. The enemy will use any opportunity he can to try and lead us astray, so it is important that we stay vigilant and guard ourselves against sinful behavior.
Additionally, the Bible urges us to take responsibility for our own actions and not blame others for our foolishness. In Proverbs 19:3 it says, “People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the Lord”. Here, we are warned against shifting the blame and instead, encouraged to recognize and learn from our mistakes.
The Choice To Become Wise
Though the Bible speaks of a fool as someone who engages in foolish behavior, it also provides us with an opportunity to choose to pursue wisdom instead. In 1 Corinthians 1:20 it says, “Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?” In this passage, the Bible is telling us that although the world may value and seek out human wisdom and knowledge, true wisdom can only come from God.
The Bible also tells us that God desires for us to receive His wisdom and obey His commands, saying in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight”. When we seek out God’s guidance and submit to His plans for our lives, we will be delivered from the tragedy and danger of being a fool.
It is also important to remember that wisdom does not come to us automatically, but instead must be actively pursued. In Proverbs 4:7, it says, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” Here, the Bible is telling us that we must choose to seek out true wisdom and take the time to understand God’s plan for our lives. This can be a difficult, but rewarding process, and it is worth the effort.
Changing From Foolish To Wise
Though the Bible speaks of being a fool as a bad thing, it also shows us how to change our behavior and become wise. In Proverbs 9:9-10 it says, “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning”. This tells us that when we turn to those who are wiser than us and ask for advice, we can grow in understanding and wisdom.
The Bible also encourages us to be humble and to seek out wise counsel from righteous people. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed”. What this tells us is that when we surround ourselves with wise, God-fearing people, we will be more likely to receive good advice and make better decisions.
Finally, the Bible also shows us that when we make the choice to become wise, God will be with us and give us strength. In Proverbs 2:7 it says, “He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless”. This passage reminds us that when we do what is right and seek out true wisdom, then God will protect us and give us strength throughout our journey.
