What Does Prosper Mean In The Bible?
The word ‘prosper’ is mentioned many times in the Bible. It has been used as an exhortation to believers, a sign of God’s blessing, and a promise of success or wealth. But what does it mean to prosper according to the Bible?
Many passages in the Bible use the word ‘prosper’ to indicate a recognition of success or wealth. A typical example of this is Proverbs 11:25 which states: “The generous will prosper and those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed”. In this passage, the one who is generous will experience success and wealth as a result of their generous giving.
In other passages, ‘prosper’ is used to refer to a physical promotion or something spiritual, such as living a life free from worry and fear. For example, Psalm 1:3 states: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither; whatever he does prospers”. The idea here is that a good and faithful person will experience God’s favor in their life, leading to success and a sense of security regardless of circumstances.
However, while the concept of ‘prosper’ in the Bible is often associated with success and wealth, it is important to remember that these are secondary benefits of stronger faith in God. One of the most famous verses is Proverbs 3:13-14 which states: “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold”.
