Definition of Perverse
The word ‘perverse’ can be defined as something that has been turned from a proper direction or course to an improper one. In the Bible it is used as an adjective to describe a person’s behaviour, thoughts or speech. It is also used to describe a particular lifestyle or conduct that is contrary to God’s will.
Biblical References to Perverse Behaviour
The Bible has numerous references to perverse behaviour. For example, Leviticus 20:6-7 warns against perverse behaviour, stating that “If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death”. Additionally, Proverbs 8:13 states “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate”. In the New Testament, Jesus also warns against perverse behaviour, for instance in Matthew 7:15-16 which states “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?”.
Examples of Perverse Behaviour
