God’s Role in Defining the Good Woman
The Bible is a valuable source of wisdom, outlining God’s view of the world. It’s one part of the composite wisdom that informs us who we are today. We find many timeless morals in the Bible, as well as ancient wisdom about how to excel in being a good woman.
The Bible states that God created women for companionship and to share in the joy of their husband’s life. The Bible does not specify a single or particular kind of woman, but it does specify what women should do to lead a good and blessed life. To be a good woman according to the Bible, women must understand the commands and responsibilities God has given them.
The Bible’s View of Womanhood
The Bible provides an overview of what it means to be a good woman. It expresses God’s pleasure in and appreciation for the female form and spirit, and explains how this delight can be maximized in behavior. Through the Bible, God sets out a range of expectations for women. For example, women are called to dress sensibly and modestly. By dressing modestly, women can demonstrate respect for themselves, leading to respect from others.
Women also have a strong role in the home and should be dedicated to their families. In Proverbs 31:10-31, which is known as the “Woman of Valor,” we see an example of the ideal woman. We can learn from her example how to be faithful and hardworking members of the family. This passage illustrates how meaningful and satisfying service to the family is a noble pursuit and can be fulfilling to the woman who puts her heart and efforts into it.
A Woman of Faith and Integrity
The Bible also emphasizes a woman of faith and integrity. Women should strive to be known for reliability and trust. God calls believers to a lifestyle of faith and morality that reflects on him and strengthens God’s reputation in the world. The Bible outlines ethical norms in relation to the responsibilities of being a woman, such as being honest, above reproach and understanding God’s call on our lives. Women should be committed to righteousness and serving God in everything they do.
In Proverbs 31:26 it reads, “She speaketh with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” Women should use their words to honor God and build people up. This requires mindful communication and thoughtfulness. This means speaking truth and not gossiping or being slanderous. Proverbs 31:11 notes, “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.” Women should strive to be reliable, faithful and trustworthy partners, honoring and loving their husbands more than themselves.
Women of Self-Control and Hope
Titus 2:3-5 states, “Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that reflects good character. They must not slander others or be enslaved to much wine. Instead, they should teach others what is good. Then they will be train the younger women to love their husbands and children; to be sensible, pure, and hardworking; to obey their husbands; and to be careful not to say or do anything wrong.” Women should practice self-control in every area of their lives. This includes their words, desires, and emotions. They should aim to be hopeful and seek God’s will even in difficult times.
Women of Compassion and Liveliness
In Proverbs 31:20 we see a woman of compassion, feeding the poor and clothing the needy. Women should be generous and compassionate, wanting to help those in need. They should be mindful of the way they are impacting the community and looking for ways to be a blessing. It’s also important to have a heart that’s alive and full of joy, not sorrow. Women should strive to add liveliness to those around them and fill those around them with cheer.
Women of Perseverance and Courage
The Bible encourages us to be brave and determined even when faced with difficulty. It’s easy to give up, but women should be filled with courage and strength, taking risks with confidence. We can do extraordinary things when we persevere and go out on a limb. In Proverbs 31:24-25, the “Woman of Valor” displays great determination, “She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.” This woman was ambitious and worked hard for her family, trusting in God to bring the kind of fruition he intended.
Women of Prayer and Honor
Women should remember that God is always with them and can help them face and overcome any trial. A Christian woman should be devoted to prayer and living in accordance with God’s word. This can ensure that their peace and joy is overflowing. Also, they should honor God in their decisions and choices and practice living with righteousness and faith.
Women of Gratitude and Humility
The Bible encourages women to be grateful for the blessings God has given them and be thankful for the love and kindness of others. It’s important for women to be humble and recognize the small and large favors from God. Women can demonstrate this gratitude by being humble and trusting God’s timing in their lives, rather than pushing to get what they want right away. In 1 Peter 3:3-4, it reads, “Let not yours be the [outward] adorning with braided hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of fine clothing, but [let it be] the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit which is of great price in the sight of God.”
Women of Wisdom and Fortitude
Women should strive to be wise and prudent, making decisions that honor God and benefit those around them. Ultimately, wise choices are based on God’s promises. Young women should strive to become wise, active, leading members of their family, community, and church. They can also demonstrate fortitude or perseverance to inspire others and demonstrate their moral strength. We can see this quality in Queen Esther who, with courage and faith, saved her people from destruction.
