However, Tyndale’s martyrdom for his religious beliefs is a powerful reminder of the cost of stands against oppression and for free thought.
The Roman Emperor Diocletian was a fierce opponent of Christianity and did everything he could to stamp it out. In AD 301-304, he ordered the burning of thousands of copies of the Bible and decreed that all Bibles be destroyed. He also ordered that any home with a Bible in it should be burned. In fact, he even built a monument over what he thought was the last surviving Bible. However, the Christian faith proved to be much stronger than Diocletian could have ever imagined and it survived despite his best efforts to annihilate it.
