Overview of Beliefs About God
The Bible doesn’t actually say what God looks like, but it is accepted that the Bible’s author, the Judeo-Christian God of the Old and New Testaments, is an invisible, omniscient, omnipotent and immutable being. The belief is that he *is not* an image that we can see, or a human being, or even an animal of any kind. Rather, he is an abstract being, beyond human comprehension. The Bible does provide some insights into how we should think about and relate to God.
God’s Characteristics in the Bible
It is interesting to note that although the Bible does not explicitly describe God’s physical appearance, it does feature many references to his attributes and characteristics. For example, Deuteronomy 33:27 states that “The eternal God is a dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms”. In Psalm 90:2 we read: “From everlasting to everlasting You are God”. In Isaiah 41:10 we read: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand”.
These references to God’s power and His existence as an eternal being echo throughout the Bible and provide insight into His character. From these passages, we can assume that God is a loving and powerful Creator who exists beyond the physical space and time that we experience here on earth.
God’s Nature and Love
The Bible also provides us with a great deal of information about God’s nature and His love. For example, in John 3:16-17 it says: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. This passage tells us that God loves us enough to give us the gift of His Son and eternal life.
Moreover, the Bible talks a great deal about God’s mercy and compassion. In Psalms 25:6 it says: “Remember, O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for they are from of old”. This passage allows us to gain a greater understanding of the kind and compassionate nature of God.
Methods of Serving God
It is also important to note that the Bible does not only focus on God’s nature and attributes, but it also describes ways for us to serve God. For example, Romans 12:1-2 urges us to “present our bodies as a living sacrifice which is our reasonable service”.
The Bible also encourages us to seek God’s presence through prayer and obedience. In 1John 5:14 it says: “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us”. This passage encourages us to pray earnestly and obediently, as we can be sure that God is listening and will answer our prayers as long as they are in line with his will.
God’s Justice and Wrath
The Bible also speaks of God’s justice and wrath. For example, in Romans 12:19 it says: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay”. This passage speaks to the fact that God will repay those who do evil and will take justice into his own hands when necessary.
The Bible also speaks to God’s wrath. In Psalms 7:11 it says: “God is a righteous judge, and a God who has indignation every day”. This passage speaks to God’s wrath and how He reserves the right to punish and express His displeasure when something is wrong.
God’s Grace and Forgiveness
Despite the fact that the Bible talks about God’s wrath and justice, it also talks a great deal about God’s grace and forgiveness. In Romans 5:8 it says: “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. This passage speaks to the fact that despite our flaws and mistakes, God still loves us and is willing to forgive our sins if we turn to Him for guidance and help.
The Bible is full of passages speaking to God’s grace and mercy. In Psalms 86:5 it says: “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy unto all them that call upon You”. This passage tells us that God is good and willing to forgive us if we come to Him in humility, asking for His help and grace.
God’s Holiness
The Bible speaks a great deal of God’s holiness. In Leviticus 11:44 it says: “For I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy” This passage speaks to the fact that God that is perfect and holy, and we should strive to be like Him.
In Isaiah 6:3 it says: “And one cried unto another, and said, ‘Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory’. This passage speaks to the fact that God is so holy and powerful that the entire earth is filled with His glory.
God’s Wisdom and Knowledge
The Bible speaks to God’s wisdom and knowledge. Proverbs 2:6 says: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding”. This passage speaks to the fact that God is all-knowing, and can provide us with wisdom and knowledge if we seek Him out.
In Proverbs 3:19 it says: “The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens”. This passage speaks to God’s power and wisdom, and how he is the creator of the heavens and the earth.
God’s Unfathomable Greatness
Finally, it is important to note that the Bible speaks to God’s unfathomable greatness. In Psalm 147: 5 it says: “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite”. This passage speaks to God’s power and greatness, and how it is impossible for us to understand the full extent of His greatness.
In Romans 11:33-36 it says: “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of The Lord? Or who has become His counselor?” This passage speaks to the fact that God is truly great and wise, and His ways are beyond our understanding.

The Old Testament of the Catholic Bible has 45 books and the New Testament has 27 books. God is mentioned in the Old Testament more than three thousand times and in the New Testament more than two hundred times.
The Old Testament is where God reveals Himself to humanity and provides guidelines for how we should live. It speaks of His creation, His laws and His covenants with the Jews. It describes God as a loving, powerful and forgiving God who desires to have a relationship with His people.
The New Testament focuses on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the early Christian Church. The New Testament encourages us to live our lives in full obedience to God and to love and serve Him with our whole hearts.

The Bible shows us that God desires us to live lives of holiness and faithfulness to Him. He punishes those who disobey him and rewards those who follow His path. He guides us through the storms of life, and has ultimate plans for His children that are bigger than we can imagine.
God’s Promise of Eternal Life
