Prophecy is an important part of the Bible, with Jesus fulfilling many of them. In the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life, ministry, death and resurrection, we see many prophecies fulfilled. But just how many prophecies did Jesus fulfill in the Bible?

When looking at the number of prophecies that Jesus fulfilled, it is clear that there are many. Scholars have identified more than 300 Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah that were fulfilled by Jesus. Even many of Jesus’ contemporaries recognized that he had fulfilled Old Testament prophecies, including the chief priests, who, upon hearing Jesus’ words, exclaimed: “He has spoken blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Mark 2:7).

The 300-plus prophecies can generally be broken down into major and minor prophecies. Major prophecies include those dealing with Jesus’ virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25), the location of his birth (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1-6), his ministry and miracles (Isaiah 35:5-7; Luke 2:40-52; Matthew 4:23-25; Matthew 8:16-17), his betrayal (Psalm 41:9; Matthew 26:21-23) and his death and resurrection (Psalm 16:10; John 11:25).

Minor prophecies are more difficult to identify because they are often more implicit or implied. For example, Psalm 22 describes the crucifixion of Jesus in vivid detail hundreds of years before the event occurred. These minor prophecies often serve as evidence of the larger events that Jesus fulfilled.

Fulfilling Prophecy in the New Testament

While the prophecies of Jesus’ life and ministry are found mainly in the Old Testament, the New Testament also includes several prophecies that Jesus fulfilled. For example, many of Jesus’ parables teach truths that had been prophesied in the Old Testament. Additionally, several of Jesus’ miracles such as feeding the 5,000 (Luke 9:10-17) and turning water into wine (John 2:1-11) are also seen as fulfilling specific prophecies.
