Overview

The concept of resurrection is one that has been around since time began. In the Bible, there are many different scriptures that talk about theraising of the dead. Depending on the interpretation of the text, some passages may appear to refer to additional resurrections. In this article, we will discuss the various resurrections mentioned in the Bible, their context, and why some scholars believe that these texts may be referring to extra events beyond the three canonical resurrections.

What are the Canonical Resurrections?

The three canonical resurrections in the Bible are those of Jesus Christ, Lazarus, and Jairus’ daughter. The resurrection of Jesus is the most famous, and it is religiously significant for Christians because it is believed to be a sign of the power of God and evidence of the truth of Jesus’s claim to be the Son of God.

The resurrection of Lazarus is found in the book of John (John 11:1–44). It is the only canonical resurrection that is recorded in all four gospels and it is of particular significance to Jesus’ mission because it was the first miraculous act that was performed during his ministry.

The resurrection of Jairus’ daughter, which is found in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 8:40–56) is significant because it was the second miracle performed by Jesus during his ministry. This event provided further evidence to the people of the time that Jesus was an extraordinary figure.
