Discernment is the ability to hear and follow the voice of God. This can happen through prayer, contemplation and/or time in the Bible. As we give time to these disciplines, we begin to discern God’s voice over the noise of our world. The Holy Spirit begins speaking to us and we begin to hear God through those around us, circumstances and even our conscience.

The Bible has a lot to say about the heart. In fact, the word “heart” is used over 800 times in Scripture! Obviously, then, the Bible has a lot to say about what the heart is and what it means.

The word “heart” in the Bible can mean a few different things. It can refer to the physical organ, the seat of our emotions, or the center of our will. But most often, when the Bible talks about the heart, it is referring to the seat of our character and the center of our spiritual life.

The Bible says that the heart is “deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9). This means that our hearts are not to be trusted. They are not always reliable. We cannot rely on our hearts to tell us what is right and what is wrong.

instead, we must rely on God’s Word to guide us. The Bible is clear that our hearts are to be submitted to God and His Word (Proverbs 3:5). We are to “lean not on our own understanding” but to “acknowledge Him in all our ways” (Proverbs 3:6).

The bible is clear that the heart is not just a physical organ that pumps blood, but is the center of our emotions, thoughts and desires. When the bible speaks of the heart, it is referring to our innermost being, what we truly believe and feel. Our heart is what motivates us to action, and it is the source of our strength and wisdom. The bible tells us to guard our hearts, because it is the most important part of who we are.

[9
