Introduction

The Bible gives us many people from the past whose stories are still important today, and Jairus, who was mentioned in the Gospel of Mark and Luke is one of them. Jairus was a synagogue ruler of Capernaum who asked Jesus for help for his young daughter who was at the point of death. This request made Jairus very memorable in the Bible and illustrates the power of faith and the extent of Jesus’s love for humanity. In this article, we will explore the biblical context in which Jairus figures, his role in the Bible story, and what his story can tell us about faith and prayer today.

Context

The story of Jairus is related in the Gospel According to Mark and the Gospel According to Luke. The Gospels tell of how a synagogue ruler named Jairus, who came to Jesus and fell at his feet asking him to come to his house and heal his daughter who was at the point of death. Jesus went with him, and while He was on the way a woman who had had a bleeding issue for twelve years touched His cloak and was healed.

What is particularly significant about this story is how Jesus reacts to both requests for his help-he does not immediately comply with Jairus’s plea, because he takes the time to acknowledge and heal the woman. This shows us that Jesus did not think of people in terms of their social standing, but in terms of their individual needs.

Jairus’ Faith

Despite the delay, Jairus did not give up hope; his faith in Jesus was so strong that he still believed that Jesus could heal his daughter. He waited for Jesus and did not waver in his belief that Jesus could help, despite the “distraction” presented by the woman’s request. This story demonstrates the power of faith and prayer; because of Jairus’s faith, he persisted in his request until it was answered. We can learn from this that we should never give up hope in difficult times, and that if we keep our faith strong, we may see the seemingly impossible come to pass.
