The Good Samaritan appears in the Bible in the Gospel of Luke (10:25-37). In modern usage, this parable has come to mean a person who comes to the aid of another person or group in need or distress.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan is one of Jesus’ most well-known parables and it illustrates our duty to love and care for one another. In this parable, a man is set upon by thieves and left half-dead in a ditch. Three passersby notice the man, but only the Samaritan man stops to help. This Samaritan man not only tends to the man’s physical wounds, but he also provides financial assistance to help the victim of the attack.

No matter how hard times are, most of us can imagine a situation where we may be helped by a Good Samaritan. We can also imagine being a Good Samaritan – that is why the parable has such a powerful effect on us. It resonates with many of us, and we can relate to the story in a very real way.

Many experts point out that the parable of the Good Samaritan is not simply about helping others, but about a change of perspective – the recognition of our commonality and the willingness to act on behalf of a neighbor in need. This parable illustrates a shift in perception about strangers, about those whom we may not normally consider as members of our community, or even have previously disdained.
