When does life begin according to biblical scriptures? The Bible is quite clear in its answer– life begins at the moment of conception. No matter which interpretation you take of the text, it is clear that God creates each human being from the moment of conception. This has been a core belief among Christians for centuries, and it is one which many Christians still adhere to today.

The Bible tells us that God “knit” together each person in the womb, knitting together their bones and muscles, and breathing life into them (Psalm 139:13). God is said to have known us before we were born and to have touched us even before we came into being (Jeremiah 1:5). The Bible even speaks of different stages in the pre-natal development of a baby, claiming that God “formed” the baby in the womb (Isaiah 44:2).

The idea that life begins at conception is further evidenced by several biblical passages. For example, in Luke 1:15, Elizabeth speaks of the unborn baby, John, in terms of a “babe”, implying his personhood. This along with the numerous other passages that speak of a pre-natal personhood demonstrate that life does indeed begin at conception.

However, many people have differing views on this issue, and there is much disagreement among Christians. Many people hold the view that life begins at the point of birth. This view is known as ‘delayed personhood’. Supporters of this view argue that a baby only becomes a person at birth, and before this point, it is simply a clump of cells.
