It would be impossible to fully understand the life and ministry of Jesus Christ without understanding the life of Daniel. The prophetic figure mentioned in the Old Testament, Daniel lived during the Babylonian and Persian Empires, which was a tumultuous time of war, conquest, and divided loyalties. Daniel wrote his prophecies during a period of darkness that would lay the groundwork for the coming of Christ and his salvation.

The life of Daniel, who lived during the 6th century BC, is little known apart from his prophetic writings. Most theologians agree that he was a member of the Jewish sect known as the Chaldeans living in captivity in Babylon. It is from Daniel that we first learn of Babylon’s fall to the Medo-Persian king, Cyrus the Great, and how the Jewish people were allowed to return to their homeland. It is also in Daniel that the first references to the coming Messiah and the Messianic Kingdom can be found.

Daniel is said to have been deeply devoted to God, and a great student of prophecy. He was known for having the “spirit of prophecy” and being able to interpret signs and symbols. Daniel was also known for his bravery, as he stood up to Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king, when the king tried to conscript Daniel and his friends into idolatry. This act of courage, as well as Daniel’s unwavering faith, led to his miraculous deliverance from the fearsome lion’s den.

The writings of Daniel contain many references to the coming of Christ, and it is thought that these prophecies were fulfilled when Jesus was born and revealed himself as the Messiah. Daniel’s prophecies, which include references to the coming of a king, the destruction of Babylon, and the kingdom of the Messiah, form a cornerstone of the Christian faith.
