Good Friday is an important event in the Christian calendar and has religious significance for many people around the world. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his subsequent death on the cross. The Bible tells us that on the night before Jesus died, he shared a meal with his apostles and disciples, which came to be known as the Last Supper. He then went to a garden, where he was arrested and punished, before eventually being taken to be crucified. Along with His years of teachings and miracles, this tragic event is known as the most significant event in the Christian faith.

It is believed that Jesus ‘died on the cross’ to pay for the sins of mankind. The Bible states that, despite the great pain he suffered, Jesus still made the conscious decision to die on the cross for the salvation of mankind, not only in the context of Christian faith, but also in terms of humanity’s capacity for love, redemption and forgiveness. In this way, it is thought that Jesus demonstrated the power of self-sacrifice and selflessness. Moreover, for many, it serves as an example of how to lead a meaningful life, dedicated to moral values and principles.

It is not surprising, therefore, that Good Friday is celebrated with such solemnities around the world. Traditionally, religious services and ceremonies are held in churches, during which Bible scriptures are read and sermons recited. The ‘Stations of the Cross’ is also a very popular way of remembering the suffering of Jesus, as an individual and as an icon of redemption. Moreover, devotional prayers to Jesus and songs of remembrance are also sung and whispered in many households and places of worship.

Although the Bible is clear on what happened to Jesus during what is known as the Passion, there is disagreement among theologians, religious scholars and historians over the exact events on Good Friday. Some believe there may have been more than one location for the crucifixion, for instance, and there are also questions about who carried out the sentence – was it the Romans, the Jews or a combination of both?
