The book of Psalms is one of the oldest books of the Bible and is an integral part of the Old Testament for many Christians. In its original Hebrew, the word “Psalm” literally translates to “a song sung to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument”. In its modern usage, it is typically used to refer to a poem or collection of poems that express prayers, confessions, praise, grieving and more.

Psalms is believed to be authored by several authors including Moses, King David and the sons of Korah. It is believed that these authors wrote these songs over a period of centuries.

The main purpose of the Psalms, according to some Bible scholars, is to provide praise to God. This can be seen in the many celebratory songs of praise throughout the book, as exemplified in Psalm 118: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Additionally, the Psalms also provide guidance and comfort to believers in times of distress and sorrow, such as in Psalm 23: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me.”

The Psalms are highly valued by many Christians as they are often seen as prayers to God and a way to express their feelings and thoughts to God. They are seen as invaluable tools to increase faith and bring comfort to those in need. In a similar vein, they can also bring comfort to those who have lost a loved one, as these Psalms remind believers of God’s presence and offer solace in times of grief. Many Psalms can also be seen as songs of gratitude and thanksgiving for the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us.
