Background

The Bible is a collection of books written by various authors over a period of several centuries. It is highly revered by many people and is thought to be the foundation of Christian faith and ethics. The Bible is seen as a divine document through which God speaks to humanity and gives instruction on how to live in accordance to His will. Yet, when it comes to the topic of transgender people, the Bible is often used to condemn and discriminate against them. While there are many passages in the Bible that are interpreted as being against homosexuality, there is very little discussion on what the Bible actually says about transgender people. In this article, we will explore what the Bible has to say about trans people and if there are any passages that might provide a more accepting view.

Christ’s Love for Everyone

When it comes to Christ’s teachings in the Bible, one of the key messages has always been to love and accept everyone regardless of their circumstances. Christ himself was willing to accept and talk to all kinds of people from those that were outcasts of society to those that held high positions in the Roman empire. He did this with love and understanding, showing that he was willing to accept all types of people.

In the book of Matthew, Christ invites all to come unto him without any exceptions. He even says in Matthew 22:37-39 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” This brings a very clear message of universal love and acceptance that is suitable for all types of people regardless of their circumstances. It should never be used then to discriminate against any group of people.

Biblical References to Trans People

Though the Bible does not provide any direct references to transgender people, there are many that could be applied in more indirect ways. Of particular note, is a passage in Deuteronomy that specifically addresses those chastised for wearing clothing associated with the opposite gender. In this passage, God says no one should wear anything associated gender that is not theirs, however, this is seen as an act of religious or cultural purity, rather than a condemnation of those with a transgender identity.
