Women have been oppressed in many ways throughout the course of history. Today, the battle for gender equality has reached the highest levels of public opinion, and the demand for female leadership is growing. But what does the Bible have to say about women in leadership?

The Bible makes clear that men and women are equal before God and that both genders were created in his image. However, the Scriptures also provide a model of relationships between men and women that takes into account their differences. According to this model, stated in 1 Timothy 2:12, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.”

However, this verse only prevents a woman from teaching or having authority over a man in a church setting, not in other areas of life. In the New Testament, women are shown serving in leadership roles in other contexts. For example, Junia, mentioned in Romans 16:7 as an apostle, was a leader in the early church. And Paul commends the four daughters of Philip in Acts 21:9, saying they had prophetic gifts.

The Bible also makes clear that women can have leadership roles in the family. Proverbs 31 states that a woman can be a wise and effective manager of her household and a strong provider for her family. And in many other places in the Bible, different women are held up as examples of bravery, devotion, and leadership. The Hebrew midwives who defied Pharaoh in Exodus 1. And Rahab in Joshua 2 and Ruth in Ruth 4 are both praised for their loyalty and perseverance.
