Most religious texts have some form of birthdays celebrated in them. The birthday of Jesus is celebrated in the gospel of Matthew, and the birth of Moses is given a special place in the book of Exodus. The Bible makes several references to birthdays, providing us with some insight into what it has to say about them. Although there are many interpretations, the majority of Christians agree that the Bible is clear on birthdays as a special occasion that should be celebrated, but should not become an occasion of excess or lawlessness.

The Bible is a spiritual and religious text, rather than a history book, and so its references to birthdays are mainly metaphorical. The most direct reference is given in Genesis 40:20, with Pharaoh celebrating the birthday of his chief cupbearer. This is seen as a sign of favoritism, and so it is important to note that birthdays should not become an excuse for favoritism. This is one reason why emphasizing equality and respect for all is so important in Bible teachings.

The Bible does not advocate for birthday parties, but does speak of celebrating special occasions, such as the birth of a son or daughter. Celebrations at these occasions should be kept under control. We should be careful not to make it into an occasion of excess or lawlessness. Galatians 5:19-21 speaks of the works of the flesh, and advises against celebrating birthdays in the wrong way, by drinking or becoming intoxicated.

The Bible also tells us that birthdays should be celebrated with humility. Philippians 2:12-14 speaks of honoring others more than ourselves, and 2 Corinthians 9:7 of being generous and kind. If these values are observed during birthday celebrations, it will help to create an atmosphere of love and respect.
