Loving God Through Self-Care

The Bible encourages us to love God with our whole being, including taking the time to care for ourselves in order to keep our minds, bodies and spirits strong. From God himself to various prophets, the Bible offers guidance on how to rightly practice self-care.

A key element of self-care is allowing ourselves occasional breaks from our normal activities in order to tend to our personal needs. God himself took a break in the form of a Sabbath rest, commanding us to do the same, according to Mark 2:27 “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.” Engaging in restful activities helps us to restore our emotional and physical energy.

The Importance of Self-Love

Self-Love is another core aspect of self-care and is based on the notion that we should treat ourselves with kindness and compassion. This is echoed in Romans 12:9 which states “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” The concept of self-love can include loving and accepting ourselves, forgiving our mistakes and practicing gratitude.

Developing a healthy self-image is also essential in order to care for ourselves properly. In Isaiah 41:10 we are reminded “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Believing in ourselves helps us to bring positivity and optimism into our lives, despite circumstances and obstacles.
