A scientific look at masterbation

The first recorded references to masterbation come from Ancient Egypt, across religious texts and ancient manuscripts. Research indicates that the practice of masterbation was so rampant that Ancient Egyptians even created contraptions to facilitate the process. But, is masterbation really mentioned in the Bible?

The Bible makes no explicit mention of masterbation, but there are references that some may consider to be related. One example is Genesis 38:9, which introduces us to Onan, who had relations with his brother’s widow. Here, the term “know” is meant to be used in a sexual sense. It may refer to the practice of spilling semen, a behaviour related to masterbation. This is seen as an act of defiance as, according to Jewish tradition, husband’s have a responsibility to ensure that their wives become fertile.

In the book of Revelation, we find the story of the “beast” with seven heads and ten horns. Some religious scholars believe that the beast is meant to represent sexual desire and the seven heads may symbolize masterbation. Moreover, the eyes on the beast are thought to refer to the evil pleasure derived from masterbation that can corrupt man.

Through various interpretations, some religious groups deduce that masterbation is a sin. For example, the Catholic Church believes that masterbation can lead to sexual temptation and/or addiction. Such arguments appear throughout the Bible, particularly in passages such as 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Romans 1:28-29, which both contain warnings against sexual sins.
